ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball team snapped its four-game losing streak by toppling the Lancers at home, 75-65, on Saturday afternoon at the Coliseum.
Amourie Porter delivered a valentines' day masterclass with a new career-high 27 points and 12 rebounds, for her fourth double-double on the season. Porter also crossed the 1,000-point threshold with her career effort.
FIRST QUARTER
- Both teams came out flat, combining for four turnovers before Porter broke the ice with a mid-range jumper at 7:35 to make it 2-0.
- Pierfax and Naomi Wilson extended the lead to 6-2 behind a pair of Lard assists as Winthrop's defense held Longwood scoreless for over three minutes.
- Longwood's bench sparked a 5-0 run, capped by a Jesstynie Scott fastbreak layup, to pull within 8-7.
- Winthrop committed seven turnovers in the quarter, and Longwood scored all eight of its points off Eagle miscues.
- Malea Brown hit two free throws off a steal to give Longwood a 9-8 lead with 1:09 left, and Jasmine Peaks pushed it to 11-8.
- Jada Ryce answered with a layup in the final 30 seconds to cut it to 11-10 after one.
SECOND QUARTER
- Winthrop opened the second on a 12-2 run, highlighted by a Ruff steal-and-assist to Pierfax for a three-pointer and three Naomi Wilson baskets to make it 21-13.
- The Eagles shot a blistering 12-of-15 from the field in the quarter, with Porter pouring in 10 points in the period.
- Longwood got a Brown three-pointer to cut it to 29-26, but Ryiah Wilson grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to push it back to 31-26.
- Ruff added a jumper in transition and Naomi Wilson converted a fastbreak layup off a Porter assist to stretch it to 35-26.
- Lard dished out six assists in the quarter as Winthrop's ball movement carved up the Longwood defense.
- Porter capped the half with two free throws to send Winthrop into the break with a 37-28 lead.
THIRD QUARTER
- Naomi Wilson grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on the Eagles' first possession, then Lard hit a jumper to push it to 41-30 in under two minutes.
- Porter grabbed a rebound and pushed ahead for a fastbreak layup at 7:40 to make it 43-30.
- Ryiah Wilson added a fastbreak layup off a Porter outlet pass to stretch the lead to 49-34 midway through the period.
- Porter scored six points in a 90-second stretch, two free throws, an offensive rebound putback and another jumper, to push it to 56-38.
- Ruff put an exclamation point on the quarter with a fastbreak layup and a Lard-assisted three-pointer to give Winthrop its largest lead at 63-40.
- Longwood closed the quarter on a 5-0 spurt, but Winthrop still carried an 18-point cushion into the fourth at 63-45.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Longwood opened the fourth with a press, getting an Esenabhalu putback and a Scott three-pointer to force a Winthrop timeout at 7:56 trailing 63-48.
- Porter answered at the line, knocking down four straight free throws across two trips to push the lead back to 69-56.
- Ryiah Wilson added a jumper at 4:25 and Lard hit a pair of free throws at 2:50 to keep the Lancers at bay.
- The Eagles went 1-of-9 from the field in the fourth but converted 10-of-14 from the stripe to hold off the rally.
- Amor Harris buried a three with 28 seconds left to make it 72-65, but Winthrop closed the door at the line.
- Lard iced it with two free throws with 21 seconds remaining to seal the 75-65 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Porter finished with 27 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block, going 9-of-16 from the field and 9-of-10 at the line.
- Ruff added 12 points, four rebounds and a team-high three steals, while Naomi Wilson had 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting with six boards.
- Lard quarterbacked the offense with eight assists, five rebounds and a steal in 38 minutes.
- Winthrop dominated the paint 46-32 and outrebounded Longwood 42-28.
- The Eagles shot 51.9% from the field compared to Longwood's 39.3%, and outscored the Lancers 53-34 across the second and third quarters combined.
- Brown and Scott each had 11 points for Longwood, while Otaifo Esenabhalu added nine points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
