ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coming off a three-game sweep at Radford this past weekend, Winthrop faces Queens in the second game of a home-and-home series with the Royals tomorrow night at 6 p.m. to begin the first of the final five home games for the Eagles this season.
Following the Radford series, the Eagles have moved their overall record to 24-22, 12-9 in the Big South Conference and have won nine of their last 12 games with eight regular-season games remaining. The Eagles have six series wins overall at this point in the season, including wins over Presbyterian and Maine and sweeps of LIU, The Citadel, UNC Asheville and Radford. For his efforts vs. the Highlanders,
Harrison Wilson was named the Big South Freshman of the Week. This is Wilson's first weekly award of the season and his career and the third time Winthrop has been honored in 2023 (
Alex Logusch,
Nicholas Badillo).
The second Radford game was notably important for the Eagles in a couple notable aspects. It was the most runs the Eagles have scored this season, the most runs the Eagles have scored against a Big South opponent since a 21-3 win over 4th seeded Radford on May 22, 2009 in the Big South Tournament, the most runs the Eagles have scored vs. any opponent since Apr. 24, 2007, a 22-2 win over North Carolina A&T at home, the first Big South road series win this year for the Eagles, the first Big South road series sweep this year for the Eagles and the fourth Big South series win overall for the Eagles.
The two schools will meet for the 2
nd time with Winthrop winning the only other time they met, an 8-4 count in Charlotte on Mar. 28. In that game, Winthrop scored five runs over the final two innings, coming back from a 4-3 deficit in the eighth inning. This is Queens' first ever trip to Rock Hill. The Royals are in their first year as a Division I member after their school spend almost a decade in Division II's South Atlantic Conference, whose headquarters are in Rock Hill. The Royals are currently a member of the ASUN Conference. Their baseball program was established as a club team in 2018 and next year was elevated to the NCAA level, where they have played ever since.
The Royals enter tomorrow's game having being swept at home by Eastern Kentucky and have only three series wins on the year. Those teams are Fairleigh Dickinson, one game vs. North Carolina A&T and a three-game sweep vs. North Florida. Queens is currently 12-35 overall, including starting the year 0-4 and at one point dropping 12 straight games. Since the first Winthrop game, the Royals have gone 8-15, including eight straight losses. However, during their 8-15 stretch, they did win five straight contests, including the aforementioned sweep of North Florida. But since then, the Royals have dropped four games in a row.
Queens was picked to finish last in the ASUN's preseason poll with 25 votes (out of 14 teams) after posting a 29-22 overall record and a 17-7 SAC record last year, advancing to the conference tournament, their first ever post-season appearance.
Winthrop enters 2023 predicted to finish ninth in the Big South Conference. The Eagles finished the 2022 season with an 18-34 (11-13 Big South) record. The Eagles also welcome back 18 players, nine of them starters and 16 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.
