Eagles Garner 3 Big South League Honors, 2 Named All-Conference

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Winthrop baseball program had two players named to the 2023 Big South all-conference teams, the league announced Wednesday morning. Brody Hopkins and Josh Bookbinder were named first and second team, respectively while Nicholas Badillo was named to the all-freshman team and Parker Whittle was named to the all-academic team.
 
Hopkins earned first team all-conference honors after a season that saw him finish in the top 10 in the conference in triples (3) and slugging percentage (.567) and leading the team in home runs (nine). He was also second on the team in batters struck out (64) and fourth on the team in runs scored (28) and doubles (seven). Hopkins enters the conference tournament with nine stolen bases and 37 RBI's.
 
Bookbinder earned second team all-conference honors after a season in which he finished first on the team in earned run average (3.51) and second in wins (five), saves (two) and runners picked off (two). He also finished third on the team in innings pitched (51.1) and appearances (21). Bookbinder was named Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week for games played May 15-21 for his performance vs. in game one of a three-game series at Longwood this past weekend. This was his first weekly award of the season and his career.
 
Badillo was named to the all-freshman team as a result of leading Winthrop in batting average (.349) and on-base percentage (.434). He also finished third on the team in putouts (160), throwing out six batters trying to steal (six) and tied for fourth on the team in doubles (seven) and home runs (three). He was named the Big South Freshman of the Week for his efforts in a mid-week game at Clemson and a three-game Big South series at home vs. Gardner-Webb. That was the first weekly award of his career.
 
Whittle was named to the all-academic team after finishing sixth in the conference in wins (seven), which also leads the team. He also leads the team in games in relief (25) and appearances (26) and is third on the team in saves with one, with the one save coming at Radford on May 5. He has struck out 41 batters, which is fourth on the team.

The All-Conference and All-Freshman teams are voted by the head coaches, while the All-Academic Team consists of one student-athlete from each institution that meets the criteria and is nominated and selected by the league's sports information directors.
