Eagles Welcome #3 South Carolina In Sold-Out Re-Match With Gamecocks

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coming off a 5-2 home win in the second game of a home-and-home series with Charlotte last Tuesday in which Alex Logusch carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, Winthrop faces South Carolina for the second and final time this season, hosting the nationally ranked third Gamecocks in a sold out contest tomorrow night to conclude a nine-game home stand for the Eagles.

Following the Charlotte win, the Eagles have evened their overall record to 21-21 and have won four straight contests, their longest win streak of the season so far. The Eagles have also won six of the last eight games, including series wins over Presbyterian and UNC Asheville. Winthrop has won six series overall at this point in the season, including sweeps of LIU, The Citadel and UNC Asheville. For his efforts vs. the 49ers, Logusch was named the Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week. This is Logusch's first weekly award of the season and his career and the second time Winthrop has been honored in 2023 (Logusch, Nicholas Badillo).

The two schools will meet for the 32nd time with the Gamecocks leading the series by a 24-7 count. Winthrop has lost the last nine meetings to South Carolina and is 3-5 all-time in Columbia. Winthrop's last win in the series was on Mar. 17, 2015 in Columbia, a 7-5 margin. Winthrop last beat the Gamecocks in Rock Hill 4-3 on Feb. 11, 1996. The last meeting between the two teams was on Feb. 21, 2023 in Columbia with South Carolina emerging victorious 19-3. The first meeting was on Apr. 9, 1980 with Winthrop winning 2-1 at home.

With the Gamecocks entering Rock Hill in the top five in most major college baseball polls, Winthrop is seeking their first win over a ranked opponent since March 26. 2014, when the Eagles defeated #16 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, 3-1. The Eagles are also seeking their first win of either a Top 10, 5, or 3rd ranked team since 2006, when Winthrop beat #1 UNC on the road, 12-8 in 11 innings on May 10.

The Gamecocks are coming off losing two of three games to Auburn at home. South Carolina is currently 35-8 overall and 14-6 in the Southeastern Conference and have eight series wins on the year so far, including Clemson and a sweep of Florida in Columbia when the Gators were ranked third.

Winthrop enters 2023 predicted to finish ninth in the Big South Conference. The Eagles finished the 2022 season with an 18-34 (11-13 Big South) record. The Eagles also welcome back 18 players, nine of them starters and 16 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.

South Carolina was picked fourth in the SEC Eastern Division in the preseason poll after going 27-28 (13-17 SEC) in 2022.
