Ambar Nunez-Gomez captured the hammer throw to highlight Winthrop's opening day of the 2023 Big South Outdoor Championship, Wednesday at the Irwin Belk Complex.

Day 1 Results
On The Track (Top 8 Finishes)
- On the men's side, junior Bautista Vivanco qualified for the finals of the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.90, as did freshman Jurnii Lucas with a PR time of 54.34.
In The Field (Top 8 Finishes)
- As part of the women's heptathlon, Monay James finished third in the high jump with a mark of 1.48m, second in the shot put with a PR mark of 11.35m and fifth in the 200m dash with a time of 26.48.
- James sits third overall in the heptathlon with 2,765 points after the first day.
- Ambar Nunez-Gomez won the hammer throw with a toss of 54.64m, becoming the first women's hammer champion at Winthrop since Marthaline Cooper in 2016.
- Nunez-Gomez won the event in impressive fashion, finishing nearly five meters further than Rachel Davis of USC Upstate who finished second.
- Nunez-Gomez is now a three-time all-conference performer.

Day 2 of the Big South Outdoor Championships continues on Thursday, May 11 with the first event beginning at noon.
