ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coming off a stretch in which the Eagles dropped two of three at USC Upstate to move to 13-16 overall and 3-6 in Big South play, Winthrop heads to Charleston tomorrow to face the Bulldogs of The Citadel in their second and final matchup of the season. First pitch will be at 5 p.m.
Winthrop and The Citadel faced off earlier in the season with Winthrop winning in Rock Hill by a final score of 4-3 on Mar. 1. Winthrop and The Citadel will meet for the 59th time with Winthrop leading the series 30-28, including 15-14 in Charleston. The Eagles have won the last two meetings.
The Bulldogs came off a week in which they were swept at Samford in three games and were beat by in-state powerhouse South Carolina by 11 runs at home. The Citadel has won five season series on the year so far and are currently 14-13 overall and 1-5 in Southern Conference competition.
The Citadel was picked to finish eighth in the Southern Conference after going 26-31 (5-16 So Con) in 2022.
Winthrop enters 2023 predicted to finish ninth in the Big South Conference. The Eagles finished the 2022 season with an 18-34 (11-13 Big South) record. The Eagles also welcome back 18 players, nine of them starters and 16 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.
