ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coming off a stretch in which the Eagles swept a three game series with UNC Asheville at home to move to 20-21 overall and 9-9 in Big South play, with two of those games coming in come-from-behind, walk-off fashion, Winthrop hosts Charlotte for the second game of a home-and-home series with the 49ers. First pitch will be at 4 p.m.
Winthrop and Charlotte will meet for the 44
th time with Charlotte leading the series by a 24-18-1 count, but is tied 11-11-1 in Rock Hill. The Eagles have lost the last two meetings to the 49ers. The Eagles lost the last meeting, 4-3 on the road on Apr. 12, 2023. 2022 saw a series split. Winthrop has lost eight of the past 12 meetings and is seeking their first win both in the series and in Rock Hill since a 9-6 margin on Apr. 6, 2022. The teams first met on Apr. 17, 1980 with the Eagles winning 3-0 in Rock Hill.
The 49ers came off a week in which they lost at UNC and ECU at Truist Field in downtown Charlotte but swept Conference USA opponent UAB at home in a three-game series. Charlotte has won eight season series on the year so far and are currently 22-17 overall and 12-5 in Conference USA competition. Their biggest win of the year was a shocking 6-2 win at Truist Field against a then-Top 5 South Carolina team on Mar. 21, snapping what was then an 11-game win streak by the Gamecocks and handed USC what was at the time their second loss.
Charlotte was picked to finish fourth in C-USA after going 36-22 (17-13 C-USA) in 2022.
Winthrop enters 2023 predicted to finish ninth in the Big South Conference. The Eagles finished the 2022 season with an 18-34 (11-13 Big South) record. The Eagles also welcome back 18 players, nine of them starters and 16 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.
