ROCK HILL, S.C. - Coming off a 9-2 loss to Wofford at home, resulting in the Terriers winning all three games from the Eagles and dropping Winthrop to 17-21 overall, Winthrop continues conference play by hosting UNC Asheville in a three-game series tomorrow at 6 p.m.
 
The two schools will meet for the 114th time with Winthrop leading the series by an 83-30 count, including 41-10 in Rock Hill. UNCA has taken only two series from Winthrop in Rock Hill (1989, 2021). The Eagles and Bulldogs met for the first time on Mar. 12, 1985 with the Eagles winning 13-3 at home on the way to a sweep that weekend, as well as winning the first nine and 13 of the first 14 meetings. The two teams have split the last eight meetings but Winthrop has lost the last two. Last season saw UNCA taking two of three in Asheville, including the most recent meeting on May 21 by a count of 8-5. Winthrop's last series win was in 2019, taking two of three on the road. Winthrop's last series win vs. UNCA in Rock Hill was a three-game sweep in 2018.
 
UNCA's most recent outing was a 7-6 win at Appalachian State on Tuesday night and have seven series wins so far, including sweeps of Sacred Heart, Iona and UMass. The Bulldogs are currently 21-15 overall and 7-8 in Big South play on the year. Last season, UNCA finished with an overall record of 21-29-1 and 14-9-1 in the Big South, losing to Gardner-Webb on the second day of the Big South Tournament in High Point. UNCA was voted to finish fifth with 49 points in the Big South in the 2023 preseason coaches poll.
 
Winthrop enters 2023 predicted to finish ninth in the Big South Conference. The Eagles finished the 2022 season with an 18-34 (11-13 Big South) record. The Eagles also welcome back 18 players, nine of them starters and 16 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.
