ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coming off a stretch in which the Eagles dropped a game at Charlotte but then responded by taking two of three games with Presbyterian at home to move to 17-20 overall and 6-9 in Big South play, Winthrop hosts Wofford for the second and final time this season and third and final overall matchup this season. First pitch will be at 6 p.m.
Winthrop and Wofford will meet for the 38
th time with Winthrop leading the series by a 22-15 count. Winthrop has lost the last four meetings to Wofford, including the most recent matchup on Mar. 7 in Rock Hill, 8-0. Winthrop is 11-6 against the Terriers in Rock Hill. Winthrop's last win in the series was in 2019, a year the Eagles won both meetings from the Terriers.
The Terriers came off a 3-1 week by beating Presbyterian by 17 runs last Tuesday and then took two of three games with Western Carolina in Southern Conference play. Wofford has won 13 season series on the year so far and are currently 26-9 overall and 6-3 in Southern Conference competition. This includes taking the season series from Winthrop and sweeps of Sacred Heart and Kent State. At one point Wofford won 14 games in a row, their longest win streak ever. Their biggest wins of the year at this point in the season were against Power 5 opponents Georgia Tech in Atlanta (ACC) and Big 10 member Michigan State at home. The Spartans lost 12-9 on Mar. 8 while the Ramblin' Wreck fell 8-5 on Mar. 21.
Wofford was picked first in the Southern Conference for the third straight year in the preseason poll after posting a school-record 42 wins last season with a 16-4-1 SoCon mark.
Winthrop enters 2023 predicted to finish ninth in the Big South Conference. The Eagles finished the 2022 season with an 18-34 (11-13 Big South) record. The Eagles also welcome back 18 players, nine of them starters and 16 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.
