ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coming off a stretch in which the Eagles fell at Clemson on the final play of the game and then taking two of three from Gardner-Webb in the home conference opener, Winthrop crosses the NC state line for a 30 min trip to Queens. First pitch will be at 6 p.m.
Winthrop and Queens will square off in a two-game home-and-home series this season. This is the first ever meeting between the two schools, as the Royals are in their first year as a Division I member after their school spend almost a decade in Division II's South Atlantic Conference, whose headquarters are in Rock Hill. The Royals are currently a member of the ASUN Conference. Their baseball program was established as a club team in 2018 and next year was elevated to the NCAA level, where they have played ever since.
The Royals enter tomorrow's game having dropped two of three to Lipscomb at home and have only one series win. Queens is currently 4-19 overall, including starting the year 0-4 and at one point dropping 12 straight games.
Queens was picked to finish last in the ASUN's preseason poll with 25 votes (out of 14 teams) after posting a 29-22 overall record and a 17-7 SAC record last year, advancing to the conference tournament, their first ever post-season appearance.
Winthrop enters 2023 predicted to finish ninth in the Big South Conference. The Eagles finished the 2022 season with an 18-34 (11-13 Big South) record. The Eagles also welcome back 18 players, nine of them starters and 16 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.
