Winthrop To Take On Clemson Tomorrow Night

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coming off a stretch in which the Eagles were swept at Campbell to open conference play, Winthrop next travels to Clemson for their only meeting with the Tigers this season.
 
Winthrop and Clemson will meet for the 33rd time with the Tigers leading the series by a 25-7 count, including 22-6 in Clemson. Winthrop has lost the last three encounters with Clemson and last season was swept in a two-game series. Six of Winthrop's seven wins have occurred on the road, with the last taking place on Apr. 23, 2019 by a final score of 8-6. That was also Winthrop's last victory in the series. The only home victory for the Eagles was Mar. 28, 1982 by a score of 7-6. The teams met for the first time on Mar. 14, 1981, with the Tigers winning 9-5 in Rock Hill.
 
The Tigers enter tomorrow's game having dropped two of three to the Duke Blue Devils at home but have seven series wins.
 
Clemson was picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference' Atlantic Division preseason poll with a single vote to win the entire conference after posting a 35-23 overall record and 13-16 in the ACC last year.
 
Winthrop enters 2023 predicted to finish ninth in the Big South Conference. The Eagles finished the 2022 season with an 18-34 (11-13 Big South) record. The Eagles also welcome back 18 players, nine of them starters and 16 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.
