ROCK HILL, S.C. - Coming off a split of a two-game series to Cincinnati at home on Wednesday night to move their record to 9-9, Winthrop starts Big South play vs. the Camels of Campbell University on the road for a three-game series on Friday at 6 p.m.
 
The two schools will meet for the 65th time with the Camels leading the series by a 37-27 count, including a 17-7 record in Buies Creek. This will be the final regular-season meeting between Campbell and Winthrop as Big South opponents, as the Camels will join the Colonial Athletic Association following the season. The two schools met for the first time in 1985, with Winthrop taking two of three contests. The Eagles have dropped the last 10 games vs. Campbell and their last win in the series was a 10-9 home win on May 12, 2019. The Eagles last win at Campbell was a 5-1 win on May 12, 2018. Winthrop is seeking their first series win in Buies Creek since 1991, when the Eagles took two of three. The two teams met last season in Rock Hill with Campbell registering a sweep.
 
The Camels most recent game was on Tuesday night, a 12-9 loss at Coastal Carolina, have not dropped a series so far and are currently 12-3 on the year. Last season, Campbell finished with an overall record of 41-19 and 20-3 in the Big South, winning the regular-season and conference tournament titles and received a bid to the Knoxville Regional in the NCAA Tournament. Campbell was voted to finish first in the Big South in the 2023 preseason coaches poll.
 
Winthrop enters 2023 predicted to finish ninth in the Big South Conference. The Eagles finished the 2022 season with an 18-34 (11-13 Big South) record. The Eagles also welcome back 18 players, nine of them starters and 16 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.
