ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coming off a three-game sweep of LIU to start the season, Winthrop his the road for the first time this season, traveling down to the South Carolina state capital to take on the Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina.
The two schools will meet for the 31
st time with the Gamecocks leading the series by a 23-7 count. The teams will meet twice this season, with the return match in Rock Hill on May 3. Winthrop has lost the last eight meetings to South Carolina and is 4-18 all-time in Columbia. Winthrop's last win in the series was on Mar. 17, 2015 in Columbia, a 7-5 margin. Winthrop last beat the Gamecocks in Rock Hill 4-3 on Feb. 11, 1996. The last meeting between the two teams was on Apr. 20, 2022 in Rock Hill with South Carolina emerging victorious 5-2.
The Gamecocks are coming off a 3-0 sweep of UMass Lowell this past weekend in which they outscored the River Hawks 49-5. In the second game of the series, their pitching staff allowed no hits after the first inning.
Winthrop enters 2023 predicted to finish ninth in the Big South Conference. The Eagles finished the 2022 season with an 18-34 (11-13 Big South) record. The Eagles also welcome back 18 players, nine of them starters and 16 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.
South Carolina was picked fourth in the SEC Eastern Division in the preseason poll after going 27-28 (13-17 SEC) in 2022.
