Tom Riginos announced on Friday.
"I am excited to announce that
Ryan Smoot,
Casey Schuermann and
Bill Nash have joined the Winthrop Baseball Coaching staff," said Riginos. "They are all great fits with the chemistry and culture of our program, and we are looking forward to a great year with all three being a part of the program!
Smoot is joining the Eagles as an assistant coach while Nash will be a special assistant to the head coach and Schuermann is a volunteer assistant.
Prior to his arrival in Rock Hill, Smoot spent the past two seasons in Boone, N.C. as both the manager of the Bigfoots summer league team and as a volunteer assistant coach at Appalachian State University.
Prior to Appalachian State, he served as a volunteer assistant coach at George Washington University in 2020. While serving at both Appalachian State and George Washington, Smoot was a private baseball instructor at the Rip City Sports and Fitness training facility in Sterling, Va. While in college, Smoot was a coach for two consecutive years at a baseball camp in the Dominican Republic. Upon graduating from college, Smoot spent the summer of 2019 as a coach at prospect camps and tournaments.
"Ryan is a rising star in our profession," said Riginos. "Through the interview process, it was obvious that Ryan has a true passion and love for coaching. I am confident that this passion coupled with his energetic personality will make him a great asset to the Winthrop Eagles! I am extremely excited to welcome Ryan and his fiancé Alyssa Lund to the Winthrop family."
Schuermann comes to Winthrop after serving as the head coach at Lake Mills High School in Wisconsin last season and as an assistant coach at his alma mater Waldorf University (Iowa) the past six seasons.
While at Waldorf, Schuermann served as an assistant coach in five summer leagues. From 2015-16, he was an assistant coach at Northland College (Wis.) and spent the year before that as an assistant head baseball coach in the Rocky Mountain League.
Schuermann started his collegiate playing career at Spoon River Community College (Ill.) before playing the next two seasons at Waldorf and spent his fifth-year senior season as a student assistant coach. While in college, Schuermann played three seasons of semi-pro ball.
"We are very lucky to have Casey joining our program," said Riginos. "Casey brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program. Casey is a student of the game and a tireless worker. I am very fortune to have Casey on my staff."
Nash comes to Winthrop after being a long-time assistant coach at Lewisville High School and recently retired from Duke Energy.
"I am so excited to have Bill apart of our program," said Riginos. "He has been a long-time supporter of Winthrop Baseball and when I had an opportunity to bring Bill on board it was a no brainer. He brings a very positive attitude and energy to the program every day. I am excited to have Bill and his wife Nicki apart of Winthrop Baseball."
