ROCK HILL, S.C. – Head women's basketball coach
Semeka Randall Lay has announced the hiring of
Will Auman and
Maya Wynn as assistant coaches.
Auman comes to Rock Hill from Spartanburg Methodist College, where he served as an assistant coach for the women's basketball program during the 2021-22 season.
"I'm ecstatic to welcome William to the Eagle family", said Randall Lay. "William is no stranger to the Big South Conference. He is a very high-character person who has a great work ethic, and I am confident he will represent this institution and program with class. His passion and positive energy will be extremely infectious to our student-athletes".
During his time with SMC, Auman helped lead the Pioneers to a 17-7 record and a berth in the NJCAA District Championship. In addition to his coaching duties, he served as the four-year college and university placement liaison and managed the program's social media.
Prior to his time in Spartanburg, Auman served as an assistant coach at Belmont Abbey, where he helped the team to a 24-3 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. He worked with film, ran skill development for the wings, and prepared scouting reports. He also served as the head junior varsity basketball coach, running a complete program including recruitment, scheduling, practices, conditioning, transportation, and recruitment.
Throughout his career, he has worked at USC Upstate, Columbus State, Combine Academy, Johnson and Wales (Charlotte), and Elms College in assistant coaching roles.
"I am greatly humbled to join coach Randall Lay's staff here at Winthrop University," Auman commented. "The excitement that comes when you talk about Winthrop basketball has always brought thoughts of tradition and a fierce competitive nature. I really look forward to embracing this next chapter of the program as a part of something great."
Auman served as a team manager during his undergraduate career at UNC Asheville, where he assisted with film, organized team meals, and helped with drills and individual workouts.
He graduated from UNC Asheville with a bachelor's degree in mass communications in 2011 and is currently working on a master's degree in health and physical education from Columbus State.
Wynn joins the Eagles from Cincinnati, where she served as an interim assistant coach last season.
"I'm very excited that Maya joined the staff", said head coach
Semeka Randall Lay. "Maya brings a unique element to our staff with her understanding the commitment it takes to win championships at the Division I level. Her enthusiasm, energy, dedication and attention to detail will help our program. I believe she will instantly connect with our student-athletes and help them grow on and off the court".
During her time at Cincinnati, she worked with film, created and executed skill development plans for multiple players, planned weekly academic meeting with players, and compiled/organized high school schedules and transcripts during the evaluation process.
Wynn briefly served as the special assistant to the head coach in the fall of 2021. Prior to her arrival in Cincinnati, she spent one season as an assistant coach at Loyola University (Md.). While there, she was responsible for working with post players, breaking down film, developing scouting reports, planning team activities, and facilitating postseason workouts.
"I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to join coach
Semeka Randall Lay's staff at Winthrop University," Wynn said. "Coach Randall Lay has had an exceptional career at both the collegiate and professional levels, and I'm excited for the opportunity to learn from her. I hope to come in and add to the success of the Winthrop women's basketball program."
Before heading to Loyola, Wynn served as an assistant coach at Albright College (Pa.) and worked as a graduate assistant in the Saint Francis (Pa.) athletic department.
She graduated from Saint Francis with a bachelor's degree in accounting and is working on a master's degree in education from Albright.
