Eagles Fall At #24 North Carolina Wednesday Afternoon

Box Score CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Winthrop baseball was unable to overcome an early deficit Tuesday afternoon in a 7-3 loss at 24^th-ranked North Carolina.

How it Happened

Joey Tepper singled to lead off the game and moved to second on a ground out, but was left stranded
In the bottom of the first, Tyler Jones was able to retire the first two batters, but the Tarheels had back-to-back hits as Danny Serretti plated Tomas Frick on a double to left center for a 1-0 lead
Joseph Szvetitz got the Eagles going into scoring position in the top of the 2nd inning with a one-out double to right field. Jonathan Strauss then hit away from the Tar Heel shift with a single to score Szvetitz tying the game at 1-1
But in the bottom of the 2nd, UNC was able to score four runs to build a 5-1 lead
It started with a two-run home run to center by Alberto Osuna and then Angel Zarate had an RBI double followed by an RBI single from Frick
North Carolina added runs in the 3rd and 4th innings to extend its lead to 7-1
In the top of the 5th, Robby Taul led off with a solo bomb to left field to make it 7-2
In the top of the 7th, the Eagles struck again
Taul singled with one out and Tepper followed with a single to put Taul in scoring position
Two batters later Ty Hooks scored Robby Taul from second base with a single up the middle, cutting the deficit to four runs with a score of 7-3
Winthrop continued to batter, getting runners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings
