Winthrop entered 2022 predicted to finish sixth in the Big South Conference, receiving one first place vote. The Eagles finished the 2021 season with a 19-27 (16-21 Big South) record.
North Carolina was picked fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division. The Tar Heels finished 2021 with a 28-27 (18-18 ACC) record.
