SERIES HISTORY VERSUS GARDNER-WEBB
Winthrop and Gardner-Webb meet for the 35
th time. The teams played in January with the Runnin' Bulldogs taking the victory inside the Winthrop Coliseum.
A GLANCE AT WINTHROP
Winthrop began the 2021-22 season with four straight road contests, including two against Power Five opponents (Duke and Kentucky). The team returned home for five straight games leading into a road game against Coppin State and a neutral-site contest against Charlotte.
The Eagles began conference play with a home matchup against Charleston Southern before going on a long pause due to COVID-19 issues within the program. Two home games against Gardner-Webb and Campbell followed before the team embarked on a three-game road trip against North Carolina A&T, Longwood, and Hampton. Coming off a big win over UNC Asheville, the team continued their positive momentum with a dominant home win over Presbyterian heading into a difficult road contest against High Point. Winthrop struggled during a three-game stretch against USC Upstate and Longwood heading into last week's contests against Charleston Southern and Radford. Winthrop won their first road contest of the season against the Buccaneers and split with Radford heading into the final week of the regular season.
Winthrop is coming off a 6-18 (5-15 Big South) season in 2020-21 with Randall Lay in the interim head coach role. Season highlights included a road non-conference victory against South Carolina State and a home sweep of conference rival Charleston Southern.
Randall Lay is in her first season at the permanent helm of the program after serving as associate head coach and then interim head coach. Entering her 10
th season as a head coach, she has served in the same role at Ohio University (2008-13) and Alabama A&M (2013-16).
BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
Winthrop was voted to finish 11th in the Big South Conference preseason poll. High Point was the preseason favorite with 143 points (11 first-place votes) while Campbell was second with 121 points. They were followed by Longwood (119), North Carolina A&T (114 (one first-place vote)), Gardner-Webb (93), Radford (76), UNC Asheville and Presbyterian (70), Hampton (50), USC Upstate (38), the Eagles (23), and Charleston Southern (18).
