Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off its first loss of the season, Winthrop women's soccer looks to bounce back when it travels to Jacksonville, Fla. to take on North Florida Sunday afternoon.
NORTH FLORIDA SERIES HISTORY
Winthrop and North Florida have met just two times, with both meetings occurring in recent years. The series began in 2017 as the Eagles hosted the Osprey in a 1-0 loss. UNF scored in the 5
th minute and held on for the win. In the last meeting the Eagles trailed 2-0 at the half and fell 3-0 on the road.

GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
Winthrop is coming off its first loss of the season, 1-0 at VMI on Aug. 28. It was a game in which the Eagles had a number of scoring chances, including one in overtime as Alex Perez's header hit the post and was cleared. After opening the season with three games in nine days, the Eagles have gotten some rest as they've been off since the VMI contest.
Winthrop has five goals in three games with goals coming from five different players.
Valentina Mosquera leads the team with three points (1g,1a).
This is the second game of a three-game road trip for the Eagles. It's the first time since 2018 the team has played three in a row on the road, which also involved a trip to UNF.
This will be the 338
th game in the history of Winthrop women's soccer. Head coach
Spencer Smith (12
th season) is coaching in his 197
th game for the Eagles. He is currently fifth all-time in Big South history in victories.
TEAM CAPTAINS
Senior's
Laurin Uptegrove and
Bella Hovis have been named team captains for the 2021 season. Both Uptegrove (38 career games) and Hovis (47 career games) have been regulars either off the bench or in the starting lineup in their first three seasons.
YOUTHFUL LINEUP
Through three games the Eagles have started seven underclassmen that includes three freshmen.
Lily Meisten and
Adelle Pruitt have anchored the defense at center back. Freshmen
Valentina Mosquera and
Emma Smith have come off the bench to score their first collegiate goals. The other three goal scorers have been sophomore's
Katy Feskorn,
Jessica Gengler and
Erika Brown. Meisten has played a team-high 320 minutes while Pruitt is second with 314 minutes.
BIG SOUTH AWARDS
Jessica Gengler – Defensive Player of the Week
- Scored the game-winning goal (golden goal) in the 3-2 win over Alabama State in the season opener
- Played outside back in the game as she netted her first collegiate goal
Emma Smith – Freshman of the Week
- Came off the bench to score the team's second goal for a 2-0 lead
- Played a total of 40 minutes in the game, including starting the second half

Eagles will play a third straight road contest on Sunday, Sept. 12 when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Wofford College at 1 p.m
