Winthrop looks for its first win over South Carolina since Mar. 17, 2015 when the Eagles beat the Gamecocks in 11 innings, 7-5. In 20 meetings, South Carolina currently holds a 14-6 all-time series lead.
The Eagles opened the 2021 season at home against Appalachian State on Feb. 20-21. After dropping both games of a double-header on Saturday, the Eagles secured their first victory, a 10-9 win, with a two-run ninth inning on Sunday, capped off by a walk-off hit by
Jonathan Strauss. The sophomore had three RBI on the weekend, while
Tyler Baker and
Joe McNamara both homered in the win over the Mountaineers.
South Carolina swept Dayton at home in its season-opening series, 12-1, 12-5 and 5-1. The Gamecocks were led by Wes Clarke who went 7-for-10 on the weekend, with three home runs and nine RBI.
