Ethan Stevenson has been named the Big South Conference Offensive Player of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
Stevenson helped the Eagles to back-to-back wins on the week that included the Big South opener against UNC Asheville. The week started with a goal and an assist in the 3-1 win over Mercer on Tuesday. Leading 1-0, Stevenson was set up in front of goal after pass from
Brigham Larsen for his second goal of the year. Then in the second half Stevenson set up Larsen for an insurance goal in the 73
rd minute. In the conference opener against Asheville Stevenson had a hand in three of the team's four goals in a 4-0 win. It started in the 20
th minute when
Jayden Mace put away a cross from Stevenson for the early lead. Leading 2-0 in the second half, Stevenson won a foot race on a punt by
Sam Jones and slipped the ball around the keeper to himself and scored for his second goal of the week. In the 84
th minute Stevenson set up
Suhong Jung with a goal for his fourth point of the match. Stevenson finished the week having a hand in five of the team's seven goals.
This is the first offensive player of the week honor for Stevenson and the Eagles this season. He is the first Winthrop men's soccer freshman to earn attacking/offensive player of the week honors from the league since Max Hasenstab did so Sept. 30, 2013.
