Eagles Look To Bounce Back, Host High Point In Weekend Series

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball will look to snap a three-game losing skid when they play host to the High Point Panthers January 9 and 10. Tip-off for both games is set for 5 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 52nd and 53rd meeting in history between the Eagles and Panthers. The Panthers currently hold a 31-21 all-time lead over Winthrop. The Eagles and Panthers split the season series in 2019-20 with Winthrop beating High Point, 69-63, on New Year's Eve behind a 19-point performance by Anika Riley. High Point went on to defeat Winthrop, at the Millis Center on Feb. 4, 94-61. Panther's senior Camryn Brown dropped 44 points enroute to breaking four single-game records in the win.

WINTHROP EAGLES
The Eagles are coming off a tough road series against conference preseason favorite, Campbell. Winthrop was defeated 69-41 in Game 1 and 80-37 in Game 2. In the first matchup between the Eagles and Camels, sophomore Sydney Hunter posted an 11-rebound performance. She currently leads the team, averaging 7.3 per game, best for 7th in the Big South. Maleeah Langstaff finished the game with 10 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. In the final meeting between these two teams, Winthrop struggled to contain Campbell's Faith Price, who dropped a career-high 23 points. Sierra Hunter led the Eagles in scoring with seven points, while Langstaff chipped in four points, six rebounds and four steals.

NEW LEADER AT THE HELM
Semeka Randall Lay has taken over the Winthrop women's basketball program after serving as Associate Head Coach last season. Randall Lay in a 2000 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where she was an integral part of Tennessee's 1998 NCAA Championship team that went 39-0, averaging 15.9 points a game while earning honorable mention All-America recognition. She was drafted 17th overall in the 2001 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm and spent four years in the league. Randall Lay brings eight years of head coaching experience with an overall career record of 67-176.

HIGH POINT PANTHERS
Picked to finish 3rd in the Big South preseason poll, High Point enters the weekend series on a five-game win streak with a 7-4 overall record and a 5-1 mark against Big South opponents. Preseason Player of the Year Skylar Curran is averaging 16 points per game and leads the Panthers in rebounding averaging 7.1 a contest. In addition to Curran, Jenson Edwards and Jordan Edwards are both averaging double-digits this season, with 14.8 and 12.3 respectively. High Point opened the season with back-to-back loses to North Carolina (95-70) and Wofford (53-50) before securing home wins against NC Central (87-65) and NC Wesleyan (108-71). In their final non-conference contest, the Panthers fell to Liberty (76-66). High Point split their Big South opening series against UNC Asheville before sweeping USC Upstate and Campbell. The Panthers are led by second-year head coach, Chelsea Banbury.
