Rock Hill, S.C. – Former Winthrop standouts Max Hasenstab and Magnus Thorsson were voted to the Big South Conference 2010-19 Men's Soccer All-Decade Team presented by Hercules Tires, the league office announced Thursday.
Hasenstab was a four-time All-Big South selection, just the 6
th player in program history to earn all-conference honors four times as an Eagle. He netted 41 goals in his career and finished with 96 points. His 41 goals rank 8
th all-time in the history of the program and his 96 points rank 7
th. He also ranks 5
th in game-winning goals, 6
th in goals per game and 8
th in points per game.
In 2015, Hasenstab netted the championship clinching penalty to give the program its sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament. Hasenstab was voted the Big South Conference Tournament MVP.
Thorsson was part of two Winthrop team's that qualified for the NCAA Tournament. As a freshman Thorsson was a starter for all 22 games as the Eagles advanced to the Round of 32 for the first time in program history. Thorsson ended up starting 77-of-79 games played and in 2015 helped the Eagles reach the postseason again. As a senior he earned NSCAA All-South Region honors and NSCAA Scholar Regional honors for a second straight season. That year he also scored the golden goal in a 4-3 double overtime win at Gardner-Webb and another in a 2-1 double overtime win at Liberty.
In 2012 Thorsson was named to the Big South All-Freshmen Team. His next three seasons he was an All-Big South First Team selection. During his career he was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week twice.
Thorsson and Hasenstab join 11 other Winthrop players named to the Big South All-Decade Teams. Larry Tavino and Alex Herrera were named to the 1984-89 team. Gary Baker and Ian Cardey were selected to the 1990-99 Team. Saidi Isaac, Daniel Revivo, Vali Arnason, David Garry, Donald Macgregor, Henry Kalungi and Patrick Mitrovich were voted to the 2000-09 team.
The league's All-Decade Teams were first unveiled as part of the Big South's 30th Anniversary celebration in 2013-14 to recognize the student-athletes and coaches who excelled in their respective sport in each decade since the Conference's founding in 1983.
A 15-person committee of Big South Conference administrators served as the official voting panel to determine the All-Decade Team, with fan voting comprising 20 percent of the overall total. The 2010-19 Men's Soccer All-Decade Team is listed below in alphabetical order by position and features four forwards, four midfielders, four defenders, one goalkeeper and one head coach. In case of ties, additional honorees have been added.
