LAST TIME OUT
When the Eagles traveled to the G.B. Hodge Center they left with a 52-38 win.
Miquela Santoro led the offensive efforts with 14 points.
Jah'Che Whitfield and
Kem Nwabudu totaled double-figures with 11 points apiece. Nwabudu also grabbed a game-high 9 boards. For the Spartans, Quadijah Moore led with 12 points. Winthrop applied the defensive pressure, holding the Spartans to single-digit points in three of the four quarters played, allowing a season-low 38 points.
WINTHROP
The Eagles are coming off an 88-54 loss to the Presbyterian Blue Hose in the last road test of the regular season.
Kem Nwabudu was the lone Eagle who finished in double-figures with 12 points. Presbyterian had four players put up double-figure numbers: Tionna Carter (20), Trinity Johnson (16), Kacie Hall (12) and Riley Hemm (12). Winthrop was held to just six first quarter points and trailed by as much as 38 in the fourth quarter. This is the fifth time this season the Eagles have given up 80 or more points to their opponent and are now 0-5 in those games. Winthrop is 1-4 in its last five games and will look to sweep Upstate on the season before heading into the conference tournament.
USC UPSTATE
The Spartans enter the final game of the regular season on a five-game losing skid. They have dropped contests to Hampton, Asheville, Radford, Gardner-Webb and most recently on the road at Longwood. Upstate was defeated 69-56 by the Lancers. Brianna Lewis led the offensive efforts with 21 points, with Riley Popplewell following behind in double-figures with 15 of her own.The dymanic duo of Dayna Rouse and Kyla McMakin for Longwood wouldn't be stopped, accounting for 47 of the Lancer's 69 points. Upstate was held to single digits in the first and fourth quarter of play, eight and six respectively, before outscoring the Lancers 20-15 and 23-17 in the second and third giving them a 51-49 edge with 10 to play. Upstate is now 3-16 overall with a 4-24 conference record. They sit in 10th place with one game remaining in the regular season.
500-REBOUND CLUB HAS A NEW MEMBER
Anika Riley eclipsed 500 career rebounds during Winthrop's game against Gardner-Webb on Monday, Jan. 6. The junior guard is the 18th player in Winthrop women's basketball history to record 500+ career rebounds. Riley is ranked ninth in the conference, averaging 7.0 rebounds per game. Entering Saturday's contest she has 613 career boards.
