LAST TIME OUT
The Eagles and Lancers met once before this season in Rock Hill with Winthrop winning the contest, 74-63.
Maleeah Langstaff led the Eagles in scoring with 16 points. The sophomore also notched 13 rebounds for the first double-double of her career.
Jah'Che Whitfield (14) and
Kem Nwabudu (10) also finished with double figures. The Lancers had two players finish with a double-double in the loss: Dayna Rouse (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Kyla McMakin (17 points, 12 rebounds). Anne Hamilton Leroy recorded 16 points of her own. Rouse also had a game-high eight blocks. Winthrop committed a season-low 10 turnovers in the win and finished shooting 42 percent from the field, 25 percent from 3-point range and 63 percent from the line. The Lancers committed 20 turnovers and shot 37 percent from the field, 26 percent from behind the arc and 55 percent from the line.
WINTHROP
The Eagles have now dropped four straight contests, after losing to Gardner-Webb, 54-49, on Saturday night.
Destinee Jamison-Whitfield led Winthrop with 13 points, followed by
Jah'Che Whitfield with 10 points of her own. Whitfield also notched 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Carley Plentovich (13), Jhessyka Williams (10) and Lauren Bevis (10) all finished in double figures for the Runnin' Bulldogs. The home trailed by as many as nine points in the second quarter before posting 21 third-quarter points and taking a one point lead into the final 10 minutes of play. Winthrop was outscored 13-7 in the fourth quarter to fall to 7-9 in conference play.
LONGWOOD
The Lancers are on a five game losing skid after dropping conference games to Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb, Hampton, Radford and most recently, Campbell, 81-76. Longwood had three players post big numbers offensively: Kyla McMakin (20), Anne-Hamilton Leroy (19) and Tra'Dayja Smith (17). Akila Smith notched 12 boards in the loss. Freshman Kyla McMakin leads the conference in scoring, averaging 18.4 points per game. Senior Dayna Rouse also cracks the Top 10, landing at sixth overall, averaging 15 points per game this season. The Lancers are currently in 8th place in the league with their 10-15 overall record and 6-10 mark in conference play.
500-REBOUND CLUB HAS A NEW MEMBER
Anika Riley eclipsed 500 career rebounds during Winthrop's game against Gardner-Webb on Monday, Jan. 6. The junior guard is the 18th player in Winthrop women's basketball history to record 500+ career rebounds. Entering Saturday's contest, Riley has 597 career rebounds and is ranked sixth in the conference, averaging 7.2 boards a game.
