Women's Basketball Travels To Charleston For Matchup With Cougars Tuesday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. – The Eagles will take on the College of Charleston Cougars Tuesday night in their last non-conference matchup of the season. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 33rd meeting between the Eagles and Cougars in history. College of Charleston leads the series 28-4 all-time, 10-4 in the NCAA Division I era. These teams met last season in Rock Hill, SC with the Cougars winning the contest, 84-73. The Cougars had three players finish in double-figures, Tyler Collins (29), Deja Ford (25) and Latrice Perkins (14), while Winthrop has four players record double-digits: Miquela Santoro (15), Jah'Che Whitfield (13), Tori Hall (12) and Kem Nwabudu who had 14 points and 12 rebounds. This is the third straight season these teams will meet, splittling the previous two matchups. 

WINTHROP EAGLES
The Eagles are coming off an 18-point victory at South Carolina State on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 65-47. Sophomore guard Myra Strickland provided a spark for Winthrop, recording 14 points in the win. Graduate transfer Madison Ervin had 10 points of her own, her first double-digit performance as an Eagle, while Jaelyn Royal led the team in rebounds with nine. Winthrop outscored SC State in all four quarters, but took its largest lead, 18, as time expired in the contest. Winthrop had nine different players record a basket in Wednesday's win, with 27 of its 65 points coming off the bench. The Eagles also won the battle of the boards, 43-24, while committed less fould and less turnovers than the Lady Bulldogs.

NEW LEADER AT THE HELM
Semeka Randall Lay has taken over the Winthrop women's basketball program after serving as Associate Head Coach last season. Randall Lay in a 2000 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where she was an integral part of Tennessee's 1998 NCAA Championship team that went 39-0, averaging 15.9 points a game while earning honorable mention All-America recognition. She was drafted 17th overall in the 2001 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm and spent four years in the league. Randall Lay brings eight years of head coaching experience with an overall career record of 67-176.

COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON COUGARS
The Cougars enter Tuesday's contest with a 1-2 record, coming off a 87-65 loss to the Clemson Tigers. Junior guard Tyler Collins put up an 18-point performance against the Tigers, while Madison Taylor recorded 13 points of her own. So far in 2020, they also faced No. 1 South Carolina (L, 119-38) and Wofford (W, 69-61). College of Charleston was selected to finish seventh in the CAA preseason poll, while Arynn Eady and Latrice Perkins were named to the CAA Preseason Second Team. Eady led the CAA in rebounds last season, averaging 9.7 per game. Perkins was College of Charleston's leading scorer in 2019-20 averaging 13.5 per game. Robin Harmony is in her second season at the helm of the women's basketball program. In her first season, the team posted a 13-17 overall record.
