Eagles Travel To Buies Creek For Series With Campbell Dec. 30-31

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball will travel to Buies Creek for its first Big South road trip of the season to take on the Campbell Camels on Dec. 30 and 31. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 41st and 42nd time in history that the Eagles and Camels meet. These two teams met twice prior to the Division I era with Winthrop winning both contests. The Camels currently lead the all-time series 29-11. Campbell swept the season series in 2019-20, defeating the Eagles 63-47 in Buies Creek and 61-58 at the Coliseum. The Eagles' last win over Campbell came on the road on Jan. 15, 2019, 59-46. 

WINTHROP EAGLES
The Eagles opened Big South Conference play at the Winthrop Coliseum against USC Upstate on Dec. 17 and 18. The Eagles and Spartans split the series with Winthrop winning the first game, 59-54, and Upstate taking Game 2, 56-49. In Game 1, the Eagles were led by Myra Strickland who put up 17 points. Anika Riley also finished in double-digits with 10 points of her own. Sydney Hunter contributed a career-high 13 rebounds. In the second and final meeting with the Spartans, the Eagles battled back from a 19-point deficit but just fell short of the season sweep. Freshman J'Mani Ingram led the team with a career-high 11 points, while Strickland chipped in 10 rebounds, a career-best.

NEW LEADER AT THE HELM
Semeka Randall Lay has taken over the Winthrop women's basketball program after serving as Associate Head Coach last season. Randall Lay in a 2000 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where she was an integral part of Tennessee's 1998 NCAA Championship team that went 39-0, averaging 15.9 points a game while earning honorable mention All-America recognition. She was drafted 17th overall in the 2001 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm and spent four years in the league. Randall Lay brings eight years of head coaching experience with an overall career record of 67-176.

CAMPBELL CAMELS
The reigning Big South Conference Regular Season Champions, the Campbell Camels, were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after a 21-8 2019-20 season. This was the first time in program history that the Camels were selected to finish first. The Camels were named the Big South Conference Champions after the conference tournament was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Campbell had three players earn preseason honors; Taya Bolden, Luana Serranho and Shy Tuelle. Bolden returns as the Camels leading rebounder, tallying 231 last season, averaging eight per game. Serranho was an All-Big South Honorable Mention last season and led the team in scoring, averaging 9.7 points per game. Tuelle was also impressive last season, averaging 8.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Ronny Fisher is in his fifth season at the helm of the Campbell Women's Basketball program. The Fairview, N.C. native has racked up a 82-47 overall record during his time in Buies Creek. The Camels enter the series 3-2, earning wins over UNC Wilmington, UNC Greensboro and South Carolina State and suffering losses to North Carolina Central in double overtime to open the season and UNC Charlotte.
