Eagles Travel To Upstate On Thursday In Search Of First Conference Road Win

ROCK HILL, S.C.—  Winthrop women's basketball will look to get its first conference road win as they travel to Spartanburg to take on the USC Upstate Spartans on Thursday night. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.

SERIES/HISTORY v. USC UPSTATE
The Eagles and the Spartans will meet for just the fourth time in history on Thursday night, the second time at the Hodge Center. The first time these two met on January 16, 2008 at the Winthrop Coliseum, the Eagles secured a 78-42 win over the Spartans. Since leaving the ASUN and joining the Big South Conference in July of 2018, USC Upstate has defeated Winthrop twice, once at home and once on the road. On January 10, 2019 these teams met for the first time as conference opponents; Winthrop lost 76-50 at home, led by Jah'Che Whitfield who notched a team-high 12 points and eight rebounds. These teams met a second time, this time in Spartanburg, where the home team won, 58-49. Kem Nwabudu recorded a double-double for the Eagles with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
 
WINTHROP
The Runnin' Bulldogs put a stop to Winthrop's win streak on Monday night as the Eagles fell, 71-59, to Gardner-Webb. For the third time this season, Destinee Jamison-Whitfield bettered her career high, notching 23 points in Monday's loss. At the beginning of the third quarter, junior Anika Riley grabbed her 500th career rebound. She finished the night with 10 points and six boards. Riley currently leads the Big South in defensive rebounds, averaging 5.7 a game. Jamison-Whitfield is ranked 12th overall in the conference in scoring, averaging 11.9 points a game off the bench. The 11 players ranked above her are starters for their respective teams. The Eagles are currently 5-7 overall, with a 2-1 conference record. They are 3-3 in road games this season.

USC UPSTATE
USC Upstate enters Thursday's matchup coming off its first home loss of the season to UNC Asheville, 68-48. The Spartans fall to 6-7 on the season and 1-3 in conference play. Barrett Herring led the Spartans with a career-high 17 points. Jada Logan and Riley Popplewell finished the game with double figure boards — 11, a career high for Logan and 13 for Popplewell. Upstate finished the game 32 percent from the field, going 17-for-53, 39 percent from 3-point range and 82 percent from the line. Senior Brianna Lewis is ranked 9th in scoring in the Big South, averaging 13.5 points a game and 36th in the nation in assists, averaging 5.1 a game. Upstate is led by head coach Tammy George. She is in her 15th season at Upstate and is the all-time leader in victories at the university. The Spartans play host to the Eagles on Thursday night and are currently 6-1 at home. They will be looking to snap a three game losing streak.
 
 500-REBOUND CLUB HAS A NEW MEMBER
Anika Riley eclipsed 500 career rebounds during Winthrop's game against Gardner-Webb on Monday, Jan. 6. Entering the contest, Riley only needed three rebounds to hit the milestone. She finished the game with 10 points and six boards. The junior guard is the 18th player in Winthrop women's basketball history to record 500+ career rebounds. The school record is currently held by Shaquilla Nunn who recorded 910 rebounds from 2012-15.
