ROCK HILL, S.C. – Four podium finishes, including one champion, highlighted day one of the 2019 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships for Winthrop. After the first day of competition, the Winthrop women's squad is in sixth place with 10 points while the men's team is in fourth with 28 points.

TOP PERFORMERS
-Junior Colby Thorn won the men's long jump with a mark of 7.45m. Thorn's winning mark was just .03m short of his personal-best, set at the 2019 Adidas/Winthrop Invitational in March. At last season's outdoor championships, Thorn finished fourth with a mark of 6.86m.

-Freshman Dalton Nichols finished second in the men's discus with a personal-best 47.60m, just .05m out of first place.

-Senior Tori Waddington placed third in women's javelin at 35.00m.

-Junior Theo Kahler finished third in the 10K with a time of 32:46.65.

-Senior Joey Jennings placed fifth in pole vault with a personal-best jump at 4.51m.

-In women's discus, junior Sara Dixson threw a personal-best 40.97m to place sixth.

-In women's long jump, freshman Taylor Anderson advanced to the final round, placing eighth with a 5.23m best jump, just short of her 5.23m PR.

PRELIMINARY EVENTS
-Junior Harper Henson qualified for Friday's finals in the women's 1500m with a time of 4:46.46.

-In the men's 400m hurdles, two Eagles advanced to Friday's finals as sophomores Dell Woodard (54.60) and Devin Low (55.10) both qualified from the preliminary heats with personal-best times.

QUOTABLE

"Colby putting himself in a position to win with three monster jumps, and improve his national ranking, was huge. Within five minutes, Dalton Nichols losing by a mere two inches as a freshman is unbelievable. Fifth-year senior Tori Waddington, who's been through two reconstructive knee surgeries, to be able to get all-conference was huge. All that within 15 minutes! Sara [Dixson] had a PR by almost four meters, 13 feet. To move from a preseason ranking of, I think 13th, to sixth was huge as well. Plus Dell [Woodard] and Devin [Low] advancing in the 400m hurdles was so impressive."

-Head coach Ben Paxton, quoted mid-meet
