Offense Plenty, Harris Steady As Eagles Close Regular Season With Win

SPARTANBURG, SC - Winthrop's offense jumped out for six runs in the game's first three innings, and Thad Harris gave the Eagles a solid outing of 5.1 innings to pick up his fourth win of the year. The Eagles topped USC Upstate 9-1 in the series finale to take two of three from the Spartans and close the regular season with a 31-21 record with a 18-9 mark in Big South play. The Eagles have secured the third seed in next week's Big South Tournament and will play Wednesday at 9 a.m., with the opponent to be determined.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Thad Harris was steady in his final regular season start on Saturday afternoon. The left-hander gave the Eagles 5.1 innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits in the process. Harris struck out three and walked two, picking up his fourth win of the season to improve to 4-5 entering the Big South Tournament.

- Jason Crumley entered to pitch with one out in the sixth inning and turned in a great relief outing. The southpaw dealt 2.2 innings of shutout ball on only two hits, facing nine batters. Crumley induced an inning-ending double play to escape the sixth inning and pitched a clean seventh and eighth, giving way to Braxton Foley who got the final three outs, pitching a perfect ninth inning.

- Winthrop got started with two runs in the top of the first inning, when Hunter Lipscomb blasted his sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot to right field to bring in Spencer Yankle

- In the top of the third, the Eagles added four more runs to take a commanding 6-0 lead. After Tyler Baker singled up the middle to start the inning, back to back bunt singles by Scout McFalls and Alex Raines gave the Eagles the bases loaded with nobody out. Spencer Yankle then drove in two runs with a double to right center field, scoring Baker and McFalls to make it 4-0 Winthrop. Following the double, a sacrifice fly by Hunter Lipscomb and an RBI gorundout by Grant English scored Raines and Yankle respectively, extending the lead to six runs.

- The Ealges put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, plating three more runs. A walk and a hit by pitch set the Eagles up with runners on first and second with two outs, and Spencer Yankle then dropped a single into short right field to score Tyler Baker and move Scout McFalls to third base. A wild pitch then scored McFalls and moved Yankle into scoring position, making it 8-0 Winthrop. After a walk to Hunter Lipscomb, Grant English lined a single through the right side to score Yankle and give the Eagles their ninth run of the day.

NOTABLES

- Four Eagles were responsible for eight of the team's ten hits on Saturday afternoon. Scout McFalls went 2-4 with two runs scored, Alex Raines went 2-4 with a run scored, Spencer Yankle went 2-4 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored, and Grant English went 2-4 with 2 RBI.

UP NEXT: The Eagles will open Big South Tournament play 9 a.m. on Wednesday in Fayeteville. Wednesday's opponent is TBD.
