Peek's Gem Leads Eagles To Opening Round Victory

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Zach Peek threw a complete game in the opening round of the Big South Championship against High Point, and Winthrop topped the Panthers 4-1 at Segra Stadium. The Eagles will play Thursday morning at 9 a.m. against either Radford, Presbyterian or Gardner-Webb.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Zach Peek came out looking as dominant as any outing this season, and sustained his sharpness from start to finish. The Junior right-hander tossed a complete game against the Panthers on Wednesday morning, his only blemish being a solo home run in the ninth inning. In Peek's nine innings of work, he allowed only four hits, striking out six and walking only one. The win moves Peek to 7-3 on the season and gives the Junior two victories in 17.1 innings in two starts against High Point this season.

- Offensively, the Eagles left 11 runners on base but were able to scratch across more than enough to back Peek's complete game effort. In the bottom of the first inning, the Eagles got on the board when Scout McFalls scored from third on an RBI infield single by Grant English. In the bottom of the third, the Eagles tacked on another to make it 2-0 Winthrop when Matthew Mulkey lined an RBI single into left center field, scoring Hunter Lipscomb from second base.

- Winthrop scored their third run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Matthew Mulkey came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. Mulkey grounded to short where High Point got the force out, but the return throw to first base was late, resulting for an RBI fielder's choice for Mulkey as Spencer Yankle crossed the plate. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Grant English led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Matthew Mulkey was the next hitter and laid a bunt down to the third base side of the mound and was thrown away by High Point pitcher Matt Hodges. The throwing error allowed English to score from second, giving the Eagles what was then a 4-0 lead.

NOTABLES

- Zach Peek's second complete game ties him for the most in the Big South Conference with two other pitchers, one of them being his teammate Nate Pawelczyk

- Winthrop banged out 12 hits, those knocks coming from six different players that recorded two hits apiece. The Eagles' offensive output was spread between Scout McFalls (2-5, R), Spencer Yankle (2-3, 2 R), Hunter Lipscomb (2-4), Grant English (2-3, RBI, R), Matthew Mulkey (2-4, 2 RBI), and Tyler Baker (2-4).

UP NEXT: The Eagles will take on either Radford, Presbyterian or Gardner-Webb Thursday morning at 9 a.m. with a spot in the semifinals on the line. The Eagles' probable starting pitcher is RHP Nate Pawelczyk
