GREENSBORO, NC - Winthrop was looking for its 30th win of the season Tuesday night against UNC Greensboro but came up short as the Spartans topped the Eagles by a 9-3 score. UNCG jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings and the Eagles managed only seven hits against Spartan pitching, falling to 29-20 on the season (16-8 Big South).
HOW IT HAPPENED

Macklin Ohs got the start for the Eagles and allowed four runs (all earned) on six hits in his two innings on the mound Tuesday night. Ohs did not strike out a batter and walked one, taking the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season.
Jaret Montenery followed Ohs by coming on in the third and was roughed up for four runs (all earned) on three hits, striking out one and walking one.
- With Winthrop trailing 8-0 after three and a half innings,
Bryan Petta came on and weathered the storm. The left-hander tossed three shutout innings and allowed only one hit, striking out two and walking two.
Tyler Jones pitched the eighth and ninth innings and allowed one earned run on two hits, striking out three and walking one.
- The Eagles got on the board in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 8-1.
Spencer Yankle led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch Yankle advanced to third on a groundout by
Hunter Lipscomb and scored on an RBI groundout by
Grant English.
- Winthrop added a pair of ninth inning runs to close the gap to 9-3. With one out, the Eagles loaded the bases on walks by
Scout McFalls and
Alex Raines and a catcher's interference call with
Cameron Roof at the plate.
Hunter Lipscomb then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score McFalls and then
Dillon Morton singled to center field for his second hit of the game to score Raines on the play.
NOTABLES
- With two hits in two at-bats off the bench,
Dillon Morton recorded his first multi-hit game of the season.

Spencer Yankle went 3-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored.
UP NEXT: The Eagles turn their attention to this weekend's series (Thursday - Saturday) at USC Upstate to close the regular season. Winthrop sit in third place in the Big South standings, a half game back of second place Campbell and a game back of first place Radford.
