SPARTANBURG, SC - Winthrop suffered a setback in their pursuit of a top-two seed at next week's Big South Tournament Thursday night in Spartanburg, falling to USC Upstate 19-6 at Harley Park. The Spartans pounded out 21 hits and used three runs in the first inning, four in the second and nine in the fifth to create separation and drop Winthrop to 29-21 (16-9 Big South) on the season.

Zach Peek got the start for the Eagles on Thursday and was unable to keep the Spartan bats at bay. The Junior right-hander went four innings in Thursday's start, yielding eight runs (seven earned) on ten hits, striking out four and walking two. Three runs in the first inning and four in the second cut Peek's series opening outing short, and Peek took the loss to fall to 6-3 on the season.

Mason Groves entered from the bullpen to start the bottom of the fifth inning and struggled with his control, facing seven batters without recording an out. Groves surrended seven earned runs on three hits, walking two batters.

- With nobody out in the bottom of the sixth inning,
Rob Hamby entered from the bullpen to make his season debut and was the bright spot on the mound for the Eagles. The right-hander went three shutout innings in relief, scattering six hits. Hamby struck out two and walked one, preventing the Eagles from needing to use any more bullpen arms.
- Offensively, the Eagles plated a run in the top of the third when
Spencer Yankle scored from third on an attempted double play turn that resulted in a throwing error, making it a 7-1 game in favor of Upstate.
- After Upstate scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles responded with five in the top of the sixth to make it a 17-6 game. Singles by

Grant English started off the inning, and Lipscomb scored from second on a
Matthew Mulkey double down the right field line. English and Mulkey came around to score on a single by
Jake Sullivan to make it 17-4. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded and two outs,
Spencer Yankle knocked a single through the left side to score Sullivan and
Brandon Fite to give the Eagles their fifth and sixth runs.
