Pawelczyk Deals, Bats Remain Steady To Give Eagles Saturday Victory

ROCK HILL, SC - Winthrop secured the series victory over High Point on Saturday at the Winthrop Ballpark as the Eagles topped the Panthers 7-1 behind another dominant performance by Nate Pawelczyk, whose efforts earned him his sixth win of the season. Winthrop improved to 17-13 overall and 8-3 in Big South play with the win, dropping High Point to 11-16 on the season and 4-7 in Big South play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Nate Pawelczyk rebounded beautifully from his poor start against Radford with yet another dominant outing against High Point on Saturday. Pawelczyk nearly duplicated what Zach Peek was able to do on Friday night, going 8.0 innings and scattering five hits, allowing one run (earned), striking out six and walking one. Pawelczyk exited after 107 pitches and was Saturday's winning pitcher, improving to 6-2 on the season. Colten Rendon got the final three outs for the Eagles, tossing a perfect ninth on three ground balls.

- Winthrop scored two first inning runs for the second straight game on Saturday. Scout McFalls led off the game with a walk and after stealing second base was singled in by Alex Raines with a ground ball through the left side of the infield. Later in the inning, Grant English came to the plate with runners on first and second and hit a line drive to left field that was misplayed, allowing Alex Raines to score on the E7.

- In the bottom of the third inning, the Eagles took a 4-1 lead when Grant English hit his third home run in three games, a two-run shot to right field for this third of the season. English now has a home run from each side of the plate in the series.

- With Jake Sullivan on first base in the bottom of the sixth inning, Brandon Fite lined an RBI triple down the right field line to bring Sullivan to the plate. The RBI double was one of two Fite hits Saturday, with Fite finishing the game 2-4 with two RBI. Fite's second RBI hit came in the bottom of the eighth inning, when he singled to right field to score Matthew Mulkey from third. Alex Raines put the icing on the cake for the Winthrop offense later in the inning with a single to right field, bringing in Jake Sullivan to score.

NOTABLES

- Scout McFalls reached base in his first three plate appearances Saturday, giving him ten straight plate appearances reaching base safely going back to the Eagles' Tuesday win at Furman. McFalls went 1-2 with a run scored and three walks on Saturday.

- Hunter Lipscomb (2-5, R) Matthew Mulkey (2-4, 2B, 3B, R) and Brandon Fite (2-4, 3B, 2RBI) also had multi-hit games for the Eagles on Saturday.

UP NEXT: The Eagles will hand Thad Harris the baseball and go for the series sweep Sunday afternoon at the Winthrop Ballpark. Sunday's series finale has been moved up to a 12:00 p.m. first pitch due to weather expected Sunday evening.
