ROCK HILL, SC - Despite hitting two long balls on Sunday afternoon, the Winthrop offense wasn't consistent enough to complete the weekend sweep of High Point as the Eagles managed only five hits in the 7-4 loss. Winthrop's streak of five straight Big South home wins was snapped on Sunday, as the Eagles dropped to 17-14 overall the year and 8-4 in Big South play. After salvaging the final game of the series, High Point moved to 12-17 overall and 5-7 in Big South play on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Thad Harris had a solid outing for the Eagles but was unable to earn the win, and fell to 1-4 after being tagged with the Sunday loss. Harris went 6.0 innings which was his second-longest of the season, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits. Harris struck out five batters on Sunday and did not walk a batter, tossing 82 pitches over the course of his outing. Harris exited the game with the Eagles trailing 5-4 after six innings.
- Out of the bullpen,
Jason Crumley lasted only 0.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits in relief of Harris.
Tyler Jones came on with one out in the seventh inning and worked out of the jam with no further damage and had one of his best outings of the season, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits in the process along with striking out four batters and walking one.
- Offensively, Winthrop used the early long ball again on Sunday when
Hunter Lipscomb hit his third home run of the season, a long two-run shot to right field to make it a 3-2 game after High Point plated three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning.
- Winthrop tied the game at three in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Jake Sullivan led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, his fifth of the season. After the Panthers scored twice in the top of the sixth inning on a go-ahead two-run homer, the Eagles got a run back in the bottom half when
Matthew Mulkey walked with two outs, stole second base, and came home on a single to left field by
Dillon Morton.
- High Point added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-4 lead and the score held there, giving the Panthers their first and only win of the weekend.
