Eagles Fall At Hampton Saturday In Regular Season Finale; Host Presbyterian Tuesday In Big South First Round

Box Score HAMPTON, VAKem Nwabudu and Courtney Hagaman each tallied more than 20 points but the Winthrop women's basketball team dropped its regular-season finale Saturday afternoon, 88-63 on the road to the Hampton Pirates.

The Eagles close the regular season with a 10-19 overall record and a 6-12 mark in the Big South and will be the eighth seed in the upcoming conference tournament.  Winthrop will host a first round game against Presbyterian on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Winthrop Coliseum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop jumped out to an early 10-4 lead before Hampton rallied.  The Eagles and Pirates then traded the lead four times in the last five minutes and Winthrop came away with a 17-16 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

The Eagles struggled offensively in the second quarter, managing only six points and saw Hampton go on a 20-0 run, opening a 38-19 lead in the quarter and leading 41-23 at the break.

Winthrop was unable to gain momentum in the third quarter as Hampton increased its lead to as much as 26 at 67-41 heading into the final quarter.  The Eagles bested the Pirates in the final 10 minutes, outscoring them 22-21 and reaching the 88-63 final score.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Kem Nwabudu scored a team-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field.  Courtney Hagaman scored 21 points, her second highest output of the season.  Anika Riley led the team with 12 rebounds.

Winthrop shot 55 percent from the field in the first quarter and finished at 38 percent but struggled from long range, connecting on only one of 16 three-point attempts.  The Eagles totaled a season-high 17 assists and was clipped on the boards 42-41.

WHAT'S UP NEXT
The Big South Tournament begins Tuesday with three first round games at home sites.  The eighth-seeded Eagles will host the ninth-seeded Presbyterian Blue Hose at 7 p.m.  The winner will advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday.
