ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop bounced back from a weekend series sweep on Tuesday and defeated the UNC Greensboro Spartans 6-3 at the Winthrop Ballpark. The Eagles used solid pitching and timely offense to give them their fourth win of the year (now 4-6 overall) while UNCG dropped to 6-4 with the road loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Winthrop opened up an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, beginning with an RBI groundout by
Grant English that scored leadoff man
Joe McNamara. Back to back RBI knocks with two outs extended the lead, as
Spencer Yankle doubled down the right field line to score
Alex Raines and
Hunter Lipscomb singled up the middle to score Yankle.
- After UNCG scored three times in the top of the fourth to tie the game at three, the Eagles retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth when
Jake Sullivan drove in
Grant English on an RBI fielder's choice, which would prove to be the game-winning run.
- The Eagles added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The first came when
Spencer Yankle scored from third on a wild pitch, and the Eagles' final run came when
Tyler Baker bounced into a fielder's choice, scoring
Hunter Lipscomb from third base.
- The Eagles used three pitchers on Tuesday night and all three had their best performances of the season. Freshman right hander
Braxton Foley was calm and collected in his first collegiate start, giving the Eagles five solid innings in which he allowed three earned runs. Foley scattered seven UNCG hits and walked one man. Despite not recording a strikeout, Foley attacked the strike zone with all his pitches and then handed the game to fellow right hander
Colten Rendon in the sixth.
- Rendon, who was the winning pitcher for Winthrop on Tuesday, was stellar in his three innings of work out of the bullpen. The junior allowed only one hit in his three scoreless innings, striking out one and walking one. The Eagles then turned to freshman right hander
Tyler Jones for the final three outs. The rookie nailed down his first save of the season, tossing a perfect ninth.
NOTABLES
- Despite having an eight game hitting streak snapped on Sunday,
Grant English returned to his hitting form on Tuesday with a 2-4 game, knocking a double down the left field line in the sixth inning and a triple to right center to lead off the eighth. English drove in one run and scored one of his own as well.
- Second baseman
Joe McNamara made his first start as a Winthrop Eagle on Tuesday. The junior college transfer went 0-2 at the plate, but reached base three times off of two walks as well as a hit by pitch.
UP NEXT: The Eagles travel to Charleston on Wednesday to face The Citadel for a 4 p.m. first pitch. Stat and audio information for Wednesday's game can be found in the game preview story. The Eagles are set to send out LHP
Cody Whitten (0-0, 8.22 ERA) to start on the mound.
