Winthrop Completes Sweep Of Longwood, Winning Streak Now at Eight

FARMVILLE, VA - Winthrop used an abundance of offense and steady position to complete the three game sweep of Longwood on Sunday afternoon, beating the Lancers 10-3 to extend their winning streak to eight games and improve to 6-0 in Big South play to stay atop the league standings. Winthrop is now 14-9 overall on the season. Longwood's fourth straight loss drops the Lancers to 7-16 on the season and 2-4 in Big South play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Steady pitching set the stage for Sunday's offense in the start the Eagles got from left hander Thad Harris. Harris gave the Eagles five solid innings of shutout ball, allowing five hits and three runs, all unearned. The southpaw struck out five and walked one, and was the winning pitcher to get his first win of the season (1-2).

- Jason Crumley came out of the bullpen and gave the Eagles his best outing of the season. The lefty tossed three innings of hitless shoutout ball, totaling four strikeouts to protect the Winthrop lead. Following Crumley, Colten Rendon came on and threw a scoreless ninth inning without allowing a hit.

- Winthrop's two big offensive innings came in the first inning when the Eagles plated three runs, and in the fourth when four more runs came across. In the opening frame, the Eagles opened the scoring when Hunter Lipscomb hit an RBI single to left center field that scored leadoff man Scout McFalls. Runs two and three came in on an RBI double by Grant English to left center, scoring Hunter Lipscomb and Spencer Yankle.

- In the fourth, Spencer Yankle knocked a 2-RBI triple into left field, scoring Tyler Baker and Brandon Fite on the play. Two more RBI knocks added runs for Winthrop in the inning, first when Hunter Lipscomb singled to right field to bring Yankle to the plate and then when Grant English tripled down the right field line to bring Lipscomb to the plate and extend the Eagles' lead to 8-3. The Eagles added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Brandon Fite scored after Tyler Baker enticed a throwing error on a steal of second base, and finally when Scout McFalls knocked in Baker with an RBI single to center field.

NOTABLES

- Catcher Spencer Yankle went 4-6 at the plate with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored on Sunday, four of Winthrop's 21 hits on Sunday which was a new season high.

- Three other Eagles collected three hits in Sundays ballgame in the form of Scout McFalls (3-4, R), Grant English (3-6, 3 RBI) and Brandon Fite (3-3, 2 R)
