ROCK HILL - Winthrop saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night, losing 14-5 to Furman at the Winthrop Ballpark. The loss dropped the Eagles back to 14-10 on the season (still 6-0 in Big South play) and Furman's win moved the Paladins to 6-16 on the season with an 0-3 mark in Southern Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Winthrop pitching was unable to keep the Furman bats at bay on Tuesday, as the Paladins knocked the Eagles around for 14 runs on Tuesday. Winthrop's pitching woes were highlighted by allowing free bases and exacerbated by the long ball, as Eagle pitching walked ten batters and hit an additional three. The Paladins also hit four home runs on Tuesday night, which tied the most that the Eagles have allowed in a game this season.
- Winthrop used seven pitchers on Tuesday night, beginning with right hander
Macklin Ohs, who allowed three earned runs in two innings. Ohs was handed the loss on Tuesday for his first decision of the season. Following Ohs the pitching came from
Bryan Petta (1.1 IP),
Dalton Whitaker (1.2 IP),
Tyler Jones (1.0 IP),
Jaret Montenery (0.1 IP),
Turner Scruggs (0.2 IP) and
Mason Groves (1.0 IP).
- Offsensively, the Eagles managed only five hits for the ballgame. Four of Winthrop's five runs came in the ninth inning, coming from a
Joe McNamara 2-RBI double to left that scored pinch hitters
Drake Smith and
Cameron Roof, and then from
Tyler Baker's third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field.
NOTABLES
- Freshman
Cameron Roof collected his first career hit in the ninth inning, singling to left center field with nobody out. Roof would score his first career run later in the inning, crossing the plate on Joe McNamra's RBI double to left field.
-
Joe McNamara reached base three times on Tuesday, going 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI, drawing a walk as well.
UP NEXT: Winthrop travels to Radford, Virginia to take on the Radford Highlanders for a three game series beginning this Friday. Friday's series opener is slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
