FARMVILLE, VA - Winthrop got another great start from
Nate Pawelczyk and scored seven runs in the late innings on Saturday to lift Winthrop to their seventh win in a row and fifth straight Big South win, a 9-3 contest at Buddy Bolding Stadium. The Eagles improve to 13-9 overall on the season and remain perfect in Big South play at 5-0. Winthrop also secured the series win, dropping Longwood to 7-15 on the year and 2-3 in Big South play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior right hander
Nate Pawelczyk continued his masterful 2019 with yet another dominant performance on Saturday. Pawelczyk went seven innings and allowed only six hits and two earned runs. The senior struck out 11 Lancers on Saturday afternoon and walked only one, earning the win to improve to 5-1 on the season.
-
Bryan Petta and
Tyler Jones for the final six outs for the Eagles on Saturday. Petta got two outs out of the bullpen, getting both of his men on a groundout and a flyout. Jones got the final four outs for Winthrop, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out one and walking one.
- Offensively, the Eagles got it going in the top of the second inning when
Brandon Fite singled through the left side to drive in
Matthew Mulkey. Later in the inning,
Alex Raines drove in
Jake Sullivan on a fielder's choice where an error aided the Eagles on the play, making the score 2-0.
- The Eagles added five runs in the eighth inning to go ahead for good on Saturday. With the game tied at 2,
Alex Raines drove in
Tyler Baker on a single to left field. Three batters later,
Grant English drove in two runs on a single, bringing in Raines and
Spencer Yankle. A Longwood defensive miscue made it 6-2 Winthrop as a throwing error on a double steal allowed
Grant English to come to the plate, and finally
Jake Sullivan doubled to left center field, scoring
Matthew Mulkey.
- Winthrop added two more runs in the ninth inning. With
Tyler Baker on second base,
Alex Raines grounded out to third base, but Baker advanced to third on the throw across the diamond, and the return throw to third was wild which allowed Baker to come in to score. The ninth and final Winthrop run came in courtesy of
Matthew Mulkey, who hit his fourth home run of the season down the left field line.
