Eagles Falter Late, Fall To Bryant

ROCK HILL, SC - Winthrop led the Bryant Bulldogs 3-2 after six innings on Tuesday night at the Winthrop Ballpark, but Bryant scored three times in the seventh inning and four more times in the eighth to win the ballgame by a 9-4 score. Winthrop lost its second straight contest to fall to 6-9 on the season, while Bryant improved to 7-6 with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Winthrop scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take what was then a 3-2 lead. In the second, Grant English walked, stole second base, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dillon Morton to get the Eagles on the scoreboard. In the third inning Jake Sullivan hit his third home run of the year to left field, a solo shot, to re-tie the game 2-2. In the fourth, Winthrop put a run across for the third consecutive frame when Grant English doubled down the left field line, scoring Hunter Lipscomb all the way from first base.

- The big inning hurt Winthrop again on Tuesday night as Bryant scored three times in the seventh and four more in the eighth to put the game away. All four pitchers that the Eagles used were charged with at least one earned run, including losing pitcher Jason Crumley, who allowed three earned runs on seven hits in three innings of relief, striking out two. Crumley entered to relieve starter Cody Whitten, who was removed on pitch count after 3.2 innings of two-run ball.

NOTABLES

- Jake Sullivan went 2-3 at the dish on Tuesday with a home run, a walk and a run scored.

- Spencer Yankle saw his 13 game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-4 showing.

UP NEXT: Winthrop travels to Charlotte Wednesday to take on Davidson at BB&T Ballpark, the home of the Charlotte Knights. Wednesday's game is part of the Charlotte Knights Collegiate Baseball Series and first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
