CHARLOTTE, NC - Winthrop baseball picked up a big win at BB&T Ballpark Wednesday night, defeating the Davidson Wildcats 7-4 in front of a nice crowd, much of which was wearing garnet and gold. The Eagles improved to 7-9 with Wednesday's victory, and the loss dropped Davidson to 6-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles pieced together a gutsy pitching night with the help of four right-handers. Sophomore
Macklin Ohs made his first start of the season and gave the Eagles three innings before being removed on a pitch count. Ohs allowed four hits and three runs (all earned) while striking out two.
- Freshman
Jaret Montenery took the mound in the fourth inning and had a rough start to his outing but settled in beautifully. Montenery allowed back-to-back doubles and then balked before striking out the side to escape the frame with only one run allowed. The Freshman would then throw two perfect innings and would extend his streak to nine straight retired. Montenery was the winning pitcher for the Eagles on Wednesday, the first win of his collegiate career.
- After Montenery hit a batter with one out in the seventh inning,
Mason Groves entered for the Eagles and escaped the inning allowing no further damage. Finally,
Colten Rendon entered the ballgame and nailed down the final six outs for Winthrop, allowing just one hit while striking out three and walking one. Rendon's six out effort earned the Junior his second save of the season.
- Offensively, The Eagles got the big hits on Wednesday that they had been missing in many previous ballgames. It started in the top of the first when
Hunter Lipscomb hit a two-run home run to right field, his second of the season, to put the Eagles on top 2-0.
- Winthrop cut the Davidson lead in half to make it a 4-3 game in the top of the sixth inning when
Grant English brought in
Scout McFalls with an RBI infield single that English beat out to first base.
- The big blow in the game for either side came in the top of the seventh inning. With one out,
Jake Sullivan singled and pinch hitter
Matt Levenson walked to set up
Scout McFalls with runners on first and second. With Davidson reliever Sam Reinertsen fresh into the ballgame, McFalls welcomed him by lining a shot down the right field line that just snuck over the wall to glance of the railing above the yellow line. Originally called a 2-RBI triple, the call was correctly changed to a three-run home run and the Eagles retook the lead at 6-4. The line drive homer was the first of McFalls' Winthrop career.
- The Eagles added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, manufacturing it much like they did in the sixth.
Matt Levenson drew his second walk of the night to lead off the inning, and was sacrifice bunted over to second by
Scout McFalls.
Alex Raines then drove in Levenson with his second hit of the night on an RBI single to left center, which put the Eagles ahead 7-4.
UP NEXT: The Eagles will welcome Charleston Southern to the Winthrop Ballpark for a three game series this weekend, marking the start of Big South play. Game one is slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch Friday evening.
