Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against George Mason

Peek And Pawelczyk Dominate On The Mound

ROCK HILL, S.C. - After back to back rainouts on Friday and Saturday, Winthrop and George Mason finally got to take the field on Sunday afternoon for an abbreviated two game set. The Eagles won game one 3-1 behind timely offense and a great start on the mound by Zach Peek. In game two, the Eagles completed the sweep with a 7-0 win as Nate Pawelczyk had a dominating start of his own and was backed by the steady Eagle bats. The two wins propelled the Eagles to 3-3 on the season, and handed the Patriots their first two losses of the year who now sit at 3-2.

GAME ONE - HOW IT HAPPENED

- Zach Peek had a dominant performance on the mound on Sunday. The junior went seven innings, allowing only two hits. Peek allowed just one earned run, struck out ten and walked three. Peek was game one's winning pitcher, his first victory of 2019.

- The Eagles scored all three runs in the fourth inning in game one. Winthrop got on the board with Spencer Yankle drove in Matt Mulkey with a triple to right, and then came the big blow of the game when Hunter Lipscomb launched a two-run home run to right to make it a 3-1 Winthrop lead.

- After Peek exited the game, the Eagles used three bullpen arms to get the final six outs. Colten Rendon, Cody Whitten, and Mason Groves got two outs apiece to close out the Patriots, with Groves earning his first save of the season and first of his Winthrop career.

GAME ONE - NOTABLES

- Matthew Mulkey and Hunter Lipscomb each had 2-3 days in game one, scoring a run apiece.

- George Mason's lone run scored was the fewest allowed by the Winthrop program in the last eight games, the fewest since a 2-0 win over Liberty on May 17, 2018

- Peek's seven innings marked the longest start by a Winthrop pitcher in 2019

GAME TWO - HOW IT HAPPENED

- Nate Pawelczyk turned in the second quality start of the doubleheader for the Eagles, going seven shutout innings and allowing only four hits. The senior struck out eight batters and walked only two, earning his second win of the year in as many starts.

- Matthew Mulkey started the scoring for the Eagles, hitting a solo homer to right in the bottom of the first inning. The home run was Mulkey's first of the season.

- Winthrop doubled their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the second when Matt Levenson knocked an RBI single to left field, scoring Grant English

- The Eagles doubled the lead again in the bottom of the sixth to 4-0 off two RBI knocks. Spencer Yankle doubled to right center field, scoring Mathew Mulkey. The next batter Grant English then hit an RBI single that scored Yankle.

- Winthrop added insurance in the bottom of the eighth when Spencer Yankle had his second RBI hit of the day, when he lined an RBI single down the right field line, scoring Alex Raines who walked to lead off the inning. The Eagles brought two more across in the frame to extend their lead to 7-0 when Hunter Lipscomb singled up the middle, driving in Spencer Yankle and Grant English

- Thad Harris came on in relief of Pawelczyk and faced the minimum, inducing a ground ball double play to end the inning. Freshman Tyler Jones finished it off for the Eagles, allowing one hit and striking out two.

GAME TWO - NOTABLES

- With his scoreless appearance in the ninth inning, Tyler Jones is yet to allow an earned run in three bullpen appearances this season.

- The Eagles' one run allowed across both games was the first time the program had allowed one or fewer runs in a doubleheader since April 23, 2005 (wins of 3-0 and 6-1 over VMI)

UP NEXT:  The Eagles will have the week off before returning to action Friday for game one of a three game set against the #5 ranked Florida Gators in Gainesville. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
