COLUMBIA, S.C.- The Winthrop Baseball team suffered an 8-6 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Tuesday at Founders Park. The Eagles led the game 6-0 after three innings before momentum shifted to the home side. South Carolina would rally to score eight unanswered runs and hang on to win their third game of the year. Winthrop fell to 1-3 on the young season with the loss, despite having a lead in every game thus far this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Eagles scored three times in the opening frame. After
Scout McFalls walked to open the contest, back to back doubles by
Alex Raines and
Matthew Mulkey made it 2-0 Winthrop. Mulkey would then steal third and score on a throwing error by the South Carolina catcher to make it a 3-0 advantage. Winthrop chased South Carolina starting pitcher TJ Shook from the game after one inning plus.
- Winthrop added two more in the second to extend the lead to 5-0. After
Jake Sullivan led off the inning with a double, he would score on a
Tyler Baker sacrifice bunt which was errantly thrown into right field. Baker reached second on the bunt-E1, and would would advance to third on a passed ball and score on a wild pitch.
- The Eagles made it a 6-0 lead in the top of the third.
Matthew Mulkey led off with a base hit to right center and stole second base just a few pitches later.
Hunter Lipscomb would then drive in Mulkey with an RBI single up the middle with two outs.
NOTABLES:
- Starting pitcher
Cody Whitten got himself into the fourth inning on Tuesday, keeping South Carolina off balance and avoiding the big hit throughout his outing. The lefty went 3.1 innings allowing only two hits, striking out three and walking five. Witten was able to wiggle out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning, escaping with only one run allowed.
- The Eagles were paced at the plate by
Grant English and
Matthew Mulkey, who each finished 2-4 on the day. English knocked two doubles while Mulkey scored two runs of his own.
- Only three of the eight runs allowed by Eagle pitching on Tuesday were earned runs, as Winthrop made four defensive errors in the game.
-
Tyler Jones (1.2 IP) and
Mason Groves (0.2 IP) each had bullpen outings without allowing an earned run. Jones allowed two hits, struck out one and walked one, while Groves struck out two of his own and walked one man.
