SERIES/SoCon HISTORY
The Eagles and Catamounts will meet for the 42nd time in history on Saturday. Winthrop was victorious 11 of those 41 matchups. Winthrop and Western Carolina met exactly one year ago to the day at the Winthrop Coliseum where WCU beat Winthrop, 65-57. The Eagles are 58-87 against current SoCon schools. Winthrop lost to Wofford earlier in the season at a neutral site, 60-59.
WINTHROP
Winthrop women's basketball found itself back in the win column after a dominant performance over UNCW on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles pulled out a 75-63 win over the Seahawks behind a career-game from
Destinee Jamison-Whitfield. The sophomore had a career-high 17 points, going 3-for-3 from behind the arc and 6-7 from the field. A 16-4 run to finish off the third quarter gave the Eagles a 10-point lead with 10 minutes to play. Winthrop hung on for a 12-point victory. The Eagles finished the contest shooting 51 percent from the field and 71 percent from the line, both season highs for the team.
WESTERN CAROLINA
Western Carolina is coming off a tough 62-58 loss to Tennessee Tech on Tuesday. The Catamounts saw four players hit double-figures as the team fought its way back from a 31-17 deficit at halftime. With 11 seconds remaining, Judith Martin Ruiz had an opportunity to tie the game with a 3-pointer that came up short. Tembre Moates led the Cats with 16 points. Jewel Smalls and Martin Ruiz each had 12 and Lauren LaPlant contributed 10 of her own. Alyssa Walker led the squad with a career-high eight boards.
RILEY CLOSING IN ON 500 REBOUNDS
Junior
Anika Riley is 25 away from 500 career rebounds. In Winthrop's win over UNCW, Riley finished with a season-high 14 points and six rebounds. As a freshman, Riley appeared in all 30 games, averaging 5.6 rebounds. She finished with a total of 174. Riley earned Big South Freshman of the Week honors and was named to the Big South All-Freshman team. In her sophomore season, she tallied 167 defensive rebounds and 73 offensive rebounds for a total of 240, averaging eight a game. Riley appeared in all 30 games. Schaquilla Nunn (2012-15) currently holds the school record with 910 career rebounds.
