SERIES HISTORY VERSUS HIGH POINT
This will be the 27
th meeting all-time between the Eagles and Panthers. Winthrop leads the all-time series 15-8-3. Three of the last four meetings in the regular season have gone to double overtime and four of the last five overall. High Point won two of them in double-overtime, both came in Rock Hill. In the last five meetings the games have been decided by a goal with two of them being a tie (both ties in 2015)..
THE LAST TIME THESE TWO TEAMS MET
Winthrop fell 4-0 at High Point last year despite creating several good scoring opportunities (9 shots, 7 corners). High Point's Jonathan Bolanos has the offensive game of his career scoring all four goals. High Point's Keegan Meyer earned the shutout with three saves.
A GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
Winthrop is coming off a 4-3 loss to USC Upstate in its conference opener despite leading 2-0 in the early going. The Eagles did have several opportunities to break a 2-2 tie in the second half before the Spartans broke through first.
Alfie Rogers scored his team-leading third goal late to try and get the Eagle back in and had a good look in the final minute but the shot was blocked away by a defender at the goal line. Leif Estevez and
Andres Carvajal each had a goal and an assist in the game. The Eagles continue to play well and create scoring opportunities as they will look to continue to do so against a Panther team that has only yielded eight goals on the year (Lowest in the league).
A GLANCE AT THE PANTHERS
High Point sits in a first-place tie with Campbell at 2-0 in the league standings and have the best record in the league at 7-1. The Panthers have the second most goals scored (18) in the conference and are led by Player of the Year candidate Siggi Benonysson who has 11 points on the year (3 goals, 5 assists). The lone loss for High Point came at home against Elon, 2-1. HPU has won three straight with a 7-1 goal advantage.
10th YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF 2008 BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP
This season the Eagles celebrate the 10
th anniversary of the 2008 Big South Conference Championship team. That team survived some of the most dramatic games in program history on its way to a 15-6-1 record overall as it fell 3-1 at William & Mary in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles captured a 3-2 win at Coastal Carolina on Nov. 5 in foggy conditions as Matt Lacey's laser from 35 yards on a counter found the upper left corner of the goal with 4:16 left in regulation. The Eagles rallied in that game from a 2-1 deficit early in the second half to clinch the regular season title. In the conference tournament (Held at Coastal) the Eagles advanced to the title game in penalties against Liberty. The title game saw the Eagles steal their third title in program history against Coastal. The Chanticleers grabbed a 3-2 lead on a penalty kick in the 87
th minute as the Eagles scored with just 21 seconds on the clock to force overtime and then in the 101
st minute Daniel Revivo buried a service to the back post for the golden goal victory.
BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
Winthrop was picked sixth in the Big South preseason poll as High Point was voted as the favorite with 7-of-9 first-place votes. High Point was followed by Radford, Campbell, Presbyterian College and Gardner-Webb. Tied for 7
th was UNC Asheville and Longwood while USC Upstate was voted 9
th. The top six teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the Big South Conference Tournament.
