HIGH POINT, N.C. – Winthrop baseball (12-15, 6-1 Big South Conference) fell 6-1 in its series opener on the road at High Point (13-12, 5-2 Big South) Thursday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The contest was scoreless through two innings.
-High Point struck first with a two out RBI double in the bottom of the 3
rd. The Eagles evened the score at 1-1 with a sac fly in the top of the 4
th as
Hunter Lipscomb brought home
Mitch Spires. The Panthers plated two more in the bottom of the 4
th for a 3-1 lead.
-The consistency continued for the Panthers, tacking on two more in the 5
th, while the Eagles struggled to get on baserunners. After the score in the 4
th inning Winthrop would not get on base until the 9
th with a
Grant English single and walk issued to
Dillon Morton, but was unable to capitalize.
NOTABLES
-Spires extended his team-high streak of reaching base to 13-straight games.
High Point held the Eagles to just one hit on the night, recorded by leading hitter
Grant English.
-Winthrop's road struggles continue, as the squad is winless on the road so far this season, with tonight's loss putting the squad's road mark at 0-11, despite the team's 12 wins overall.
