SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Winthrop baseball (12-14, 6-0 Big South Conference) fell 5-3 in a midweek nonconference contest on the road at Wofford (17-9, 1-2 Southern Conference) Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Wofford got on the board first with a two-RBI home run in the 2nd inning, followed by a solo homer in the 3rd for a 3-0 lead.
-The Terriers tacked on another run on an RBI double in the 4th to go up 4-0.
-
Mitch Spires sparked some offense for the Eagles in the 6
th with a single, followed by a two-RBI single by
Hunter Lipscomb to get Winthrop on the board.
-Winthrop would pull within a run in the 7
th courtesy of a Spires sacrifice fly that scored
Jake Sullivan. Wofford answered in the bottom of the 7
th to return the margin to 5-3.
-Winthrop failed to get a hit in the final two innings and only got one runner on base in the 9
th on a walk, failing to threaten the Wofford lead.
NOTABLES
-Spires extended his team-high streak of reaching base to 12-straight games. The senior also has at least one RBI in nine of the last 10 games.
-Winthrop is winless on the road this season, with tonight's loss putting the squad's road mark at 0-10, despite the team's 12-14 overall record. Â
