ROCK HILL, S.C. – Grant English and
Hunter Lipscomb combined for nine RBI to lead Winthrop to a 15-7 victory and completing the three-game series sweep of Longwood, Saturday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark.
Winthrop improves to 12-13 overall and remains unbeaten in Big South action at 6-0 and has won seven straight games overall. Longwood falls to 6-15 overall and 1-5 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-After three scoreless innings, Longwood took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 4th on a two-out RBI double from Jawan McAlister
-The Eagles struck back immediately in the bottom half of the 4
th as
Hunter Lipscomb hit a three-run homerun as he pulled one to right for his second of the season
-Winthrop posted four more runs in the fifth inning for a 7-1 lead

Scout McFalls walked with one out and stole second followed by
Brandon Fite being hit by a pitch

Mitch Spires came through with an RBI single that moved Fite to second and scored McFalls from second
-Following a pitching change by Longwood,
Grant English tripled to center to plate Spires and Fite

Dillon Morton drove in the fourth run of the inning on an RBI single to right field
-Winthrop posted its third straight big inning in the sixth as it pushed its lead to 12-1
-In the sixth, McFalls had an RBI double followed by back-to-back RBI singles from Spires and English
-Lipscomb walked with the bases loaded to make it 11-1 and
Jake Sullivan made it 12-1 with a sacrifice fly
-After Longwood got two back in the top of the seventh, the Eagles matched the Lancers in the bottom half

Alex Raines doubled to get things started followed by a single from McFalls and a walk by Spires to load the bases
-English came through with a single to right, scoring McFalls and Raines
-Smith added an RBI single in the 8
th for a 15-3 lead before Longwood posted four runs in the top of the seventh for a 15-7 win

Colten Rendon got the win in relief as he tossed four innings allowing three runs on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts and is now 3-2 on the year
-English finished with a career-high in hits with five and RBI with five as he finished 5-for-5 and also had three runs
-Lipscomb finished 1-for-3 with a run and four RBI while Spires was 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI
-McFalls had three runs and was 2-for-3 with an RBI
NOTABLES
-English is swinging one of the hottest bats in the league as he's 12-for-17 with nine RBI in the last four games
-English moved his batting average up 49 points and now leads the team with a .357 average
-Fite extended his hitting streak to six games, which currently leads the team while extended his streak of reaching base to nine straight
-Spires extended his streak of reaching base to 11 straight games and also had an RBI in eight of the last nine games
-Winthrop has now scored 10 or more runs in three of its six conference games so far, outscoring opponents 63-25

Winthrop heads to Spartanburg, SC on Tuesday, Mar. 27 for a non-conference contest against Wofford College at 6 p.m. Then next weekend (Mar. 29-31) the Eagles will head to High Point for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
