ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop baseball (11-13, 5-0 Big South Conference) took both games of a Friday doubleheader to clinch the series against Longwood (6-14, 1-4 Big South) at The Winthrop Ballpark. Both games were defensive gems for the Eagles, including a complete game shutout by sophomore RHP
Zach Peek in game two, the first of his Winthrop career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
-Longwood jumped on top with a two-run first inning.
Brandon Fite would answer for the Eagles in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single to score
Matthew Mulkey to make it 2-1.
-The squads would each go scoreless until
Jake Sullivan hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to put the Eagles on top 3-2.
Game 2
-The game was a defensive battle for much of the evening, until
Grant English's first triple of the season plated two to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh that would go unthreatened.
-
Drake Smith knocked a single RBI to spark the offense in the bottom of the eighth and English would follow suit with his team-high fourth RBI of the game, a single to center.
NOTABLES
-Eagle hitting leaders
Cale Gibson and
Matthew Mulkey suffered a collision in left center field and would later each exit the game and not return to the lineup for Game 2.
-Freshman
Drake Smith saw his first career start with Mulkey and Gibson out of the lineup for Game 2 and delivered a 3-for-4 performance with one RBI and one run scored.
-Senior LHP
Riley Arnone earned his fourth save of the season as he held off the Lancers in Game 1 and preserved the Eagles' 4-3 victory, recording two strikeouts and allowing no hits or runs in 1.1 innings.
-In Game 2, sophomore RHP
Zach Peek pitched a complete game shutout allowing only three hits and notching eight strikeouts.
-Senior shortstop
Mitch Spires was 4-for-5 at the plate in Game 2 (his first four-hit game of the season) and 2-for-4 in Game 1, bringing his team-high total of multiple-hit games to nine.

Grant English matched a season-high for hits going 3-for-4 in Game 2 with a season-high and game-high four RBI.
